Best time to surf: The best time to surf at Snapper Rocks is in the summer, usually in February, when the waves are clean, and the winds are light and from offshore. 

 

 

Currumbin Alley 

 

Currumbin Alley is the perfect place for you if you’re looking for a secluded spot away from the crowds.  This hidden gem is located just behind Currumbin Rock and offers beginner-friendly waves that are perfect for learning. Currumbin Alley is also a great place to learn how to surf because the waves are small and manageable.

Burleigh Heads 

 

If you’re looking for a surf spot that’s a bit more off the beaten path, check out Burleigh Heads.  Burleigh Heads is known for its booming cafe scene, but it is a surfing mecca first and foremost. 

 

Burleigh Heads has some of the best breakers in the region and is unexpectedly suitable for surfers of all abilities. Beginners should stay near the front of Burleigh Pavilion, where the waves are typically kinder.  Those with the necessary skills and confidence can travel further, stopping at Burleigh Heads National Park and The Esplanade.

 

Best time to surf: The best time to surf at Burleigh Heads is in the winter, usually in June when the waves are clean and the winds are light.

 

 

Tugun 

 

Tugun Beach is located just south of Coolangatta.  Tugan Beach is perfect for beginners because it offers long, gentle waves that are great for learning. 

 

In addition, the nearby town of Tugan offers a variety of shops and restaurants, as well as many accommodation options for those looking to stay close to the beach.  Tugan is also home to a number of surf schools, so it’s easy to find someone who can teach you the basics of surfing. 

 

Best time to surf: Tugun is an open beach break on the Gold Coast that often works. Here, the best time to surf is in the winter.

 

 

Rainbow Bay 

 

Rainbow Bay might be a better place for you if you want to learn how to surf on the Gold Coast but want a bit more of a challenge.  This beach is known for its left-hand point break, which offers some fun waves for intermediate surfers. However, there are also many waves in this area that are beginner-friendly.

 

Best time to surf: Surfing at Rainbow Bay is best in the summer, usually in March when the waves are clean and consistent. 

 

 

Greenmount

Best time to surf: Greenmount is a point break with a very safe beach that consistently gets good surf.  The best seasons for surfing are fall or winter and most often in August.
